TWO BEGINNING ROLEPLAYER CONTESTS by Meghan McLean

Chaosium is hosting two contests aimed at introducing young gamers to the fun and amazing possibilities of Basic Roleplaying. We believe that gaming is a great way for parents to interact with their kids. It is a wonderful way to spend time together, to talk about things in the midst of the game, and the kids may even learn a lesson or two (Little Timmy! Why do you want to cast that booger-eating spell on that innocent bunny? Is that a nice thing to do?).

We have a deadline of 30 September 2012, with an estimated Halloween-ish release.

New Roleplayers BRP Contest

In our first contest, we want you to create a Basic Roleplaying experience suitable for gamers aged 8-12. These scenarios can be funny, crazy, historically based, or set in a world of pure fantasy. We hope this contest allows you to get in touch with your inner child. For inspiration, ask your children what kind of roleplaying game they would like to play!

Each entry must be an original adventure between 5,000--10,000 words. Text files only. Don’t submit formatted Word docs, PDFs, Quark files, etc. We will do the layout here. Artwork can be sent along with your adventure, but is not required.

Your text document submission must include your name, email address, and shipping address. You must also include a list of the artwork you are submitting with the adventure, if applicable. Entries must be submitted by email to Meghan on or before September 30th, 2012.

  • One entry per individual, per contest.
  • The adventure must be your original creation using our current BRP Quick-Start rules.
  • All winning entries become the property of Chaosium Inc.
  • All entries must be in English.

Lurking Lovecraft and His Monstrous Minions Contest

In our second contest, we are looking for Lovecraftian Nursery Rhyme submissions.

Anomalous, Appendaged, Corpulent, Debauched, Effusive, Flabby, Foul, Gory, Jibbering, Leprous, Malignant, Mottled, Putrid, Sallow, Ungainly, Wailing… Gamers lucky enough to remember the 4th edition of Call of Cthulhu, which came out in 1989, may recall these words from the Sanity Quiz that was included as an appendix. Well, the Sanity Quiz is back! Filled with a plethora of peculiar words that Lovecraft used in his writings, the quiz is a horrendous list that would make any vocabulary master quiver in their boots.

For this contest, we want you to create a child’s nursery rhyme using the loathsome list of vile vocabulary! Please limit your reprehensible rhymes to 500 words or less. Art may be included but is not necessary.

For the full Sanity Quiz visit the Fun Stuff/Free Downloads section on Chaosium.com.

  • One entry per individual, per contest.
  • All winning entries become the property of Chaosium Inc.
  • All entries must be in English.

How To Enter

Each entry must be an original adventure between 5,000--10,000 words. Text files only. Don’t submit formatted Word docs, PDFs, Quark files, etc. Artwork can be sent along with your adventure but is not required. Your text document submission must include your name, email address, and shipping address. You must also include a list of the artwork you are submitting with the adventure if applicable. Entries must be submitted by email to Meghan on or before September 30, 2012.

Art Guidelines

Artwork is not required, if you do include artwork & maps, you must adhere to the following:

  • All artwork must be 300 dpi grayscale tiff images.
  • The name of your adventure must be included in the image name. You can use an abbreviation if needed, so long as it is *painfully obvious* that the image matches your adventure name. Image names should include a number to differentiate them from other images for your adventure. (see below)
  • Your adventure text must specify where the images should ideally appear. Use an ***insert here*** tag. (see below)
  • Your adventure should include a list of the images you are submitting along with your adventure.
  • Any images or maps that accompany your adventure must be copyright free.

Example: For an adventure entitled "Los Space Zombies of Aguas Calientes", use a tag similar to ***Insert los_zombies1.tiff here*** within the text of your adventure where your first image would ideally appear. Our layout staff may not be able place the artwork exactly where you called for it, based upon how the page layout evolves, but we will try to get close. This instruction lets us know what you intended.

NOTE: In the unlikely event that we don't receive enough winning entries to print the BRP adventure monograph, the winners will instead receive copies of all the winning adventures as well as one copy of a different monograph. Chaosium reserves the right to change these rules as often as we like, with no warning at all. You can count on the fact that we probably will. Come to think of it, maybe we have already! It's best not to dwell on these things.
